Fed: Errors made in building of nuclear reactor

The nuclear safety watchdog says mistakes have been made in the construction of a replacementfor Australia's only nuclear reactor.

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency says the errors occurredduring the fabrication of a stainless steel tank which will be used in the new reactorat Lucas Heights in Sydney's south.

The agency's chief executive JOHN LOY says repairs to the tank have been authorisedand will be strictly monitored.

Under new safety criteria, Lucas Heights' operator, the Australian Nuclear Scienceand Technology Organisation, will also have to report four times a year to the agencyon quality assurance programs for safety systems.

Due for completion in 2005, the new reactor will replace the existing facility whichsupplies medical radioisotopes used to detect cancer and other diseases.

Green groups and local councils have oppose the building of the new reactor, citingsafety concerns.
