VIC:Give blood and save three lives
MELBOURNE, Dec 31 AAP - Save three lives and give blood in 2011 - that's the message
from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service which is urging people to make a blood donation
as part of their New Year's resolution.
Donor Centres will be open in all capital cities over the New Year's weekend and people
will be able to take a break from partying while saving lives and enjoying a cup of tea.
"Every blood donation can save three lives, and it's a very rewarding way of starting
your 2011 in a positive way," said Blood Service spokeswoman Roslyn Mulcahy.
She says that every year during the festive season, the Blood Service experiences a
critical shortage of blood, which is used in cancer treatments and major trauma.
"We all expect blood to be there if we need it, and yet the health of Australians is
relying on just three per cent of the population," said Ms Mulcahy.
She said blood supply gets very low when so many regular donors are on holidays during
the festive season.
"This year, we're appealing for people to come in and give blood or to make an appointment
in the New Year's weekend," she said.
"They can put their feet up, read a magazine, save lives, and then enjoy a snack and
a drink on us."
Potential donors can consult the website donateblood.com.au for the location and opening
hours of the nearest donor centre.
