Fed: Medium-term reduction target 'responsible': Rudd=-2

Mr Rudd said Treasury modelling indicated Australia could achieve a five to 15 per
cent cut in emissions while maintaining solid economic growth.

The unconditional five per cent target was equal to a 27 per cent reduction in carbon
pollution for each Australian from 2000 to 2020, he said.

Mr Rudd said reaching a global agreement would be a long process.

"This will be the usual process of argy-bargy that we have seen in the past and there
is a long long way to go in the process."

Mr Rudd said the government took seriously Professor Ross Garnaut's recommendations
for cuts of at least 25 per cent, but considered such a target as a long-term goal.
