SYDNEY, Aug 13 AAP - Britain's riots remain an enigma; what happened is clear enough,
but how to explain them is not clear at all, The Sydney Morning Herald says in its editorial
today.

The event that sparked it might suggest racial tension underlies the rioting. A black
man, a father of four, was shot dead by police trying to arrest him in Tottenham.

Anger at the shooting sparked a protest that became a full-scale riot, with cars and
buses set alight. Rioting then spread, aided by social networking sites and mobile phone
messaging.

At some point it became clear to those protesting or rioting that the police were overstretched,
and whole neighbourhoods could be looted.

A section of the British population had a chance to get away with something normally
out of bounds and grasped it with both hands.

As the world looks on Britain with puzzlement and wonders how people could do such
things, who in this country would ever say Australia - same background, same values -
is immune from the same thinking, or something similar could never happen here?

Melbourne's The Age says the British government must carefully sift through the wreckage
of a week of street riots or risk a misstep in its response.

A host of stringent measures, announced by Prime Minister David Cameron, smack of over-reaction
rather than useful reaction.

The government is promising tougher sentencing, US-style anti-street gang programs
and restrictions on social media for identified troublemakers.

Social media restriction might apply in China, but not in any democratic society, where
suppressive restrictions are unreasonable and unworkable.

There have to be logical and sound reasons to strengthen legislation to avoid the risk
of infringing basic human rights.

Some "healing" has to happen before Britain can identify possible causes and a measured response.

Sydney's The Daily Telegraph says the federal government plans to shortly introduce
mandatory energy star ratings, similar to the ratings you see on electrical goods, for
all houses either on the market or being rented.

The effect of this ratings system and related legislation could cut substantial amounts
from the value of McMansion-style properties.

This seems unfair on owners who have invested considerable wealth in their houses.

At another level, this potential green penalty on many Sydney houses will reinforce
the notion that green always means a financial hit.

At a time when the federal government is trying to sell its carbon tax, one more reason
to associate the term "green" with the concept of financial hardship is not what it needs.

Melbourne's Herald Sun says no one can be sure who will have to bear the brunt of a
federal government proposal to put energy ratings on houses.

The plan is aimed at pushing people to upgrade the energy efficiency of their old homes
and for buyers to insist on a high-rating when purchasing.

But the proposal could jack up prices for buyers and lead to the value of some homes plummeting.

Under a 10-star energy rating system in the Northern Territory, prices can move about
$17,400 per star.

The homeowner would have to pay for the energy rating, which might undermine the value
of older houses and energy-inefficient McMansions.

The federal government must recognise the difficulties facing households.

The Weekend Australian says when mining impacts on people's lives we expect the conflict
to be resolved by due process based on a fair go.

Canberra has largely ignored the dismay at the march of open cut mining and coal seam
gas exploration over vast tracts of the bush.

The states have little incentive to undertake long-term land management and analysis
before granting leases because their royalties are based on the volume of minerals extracted
by fast-tracking projects to the production stage.

Perhaps state royalties should be on the agenda of the October tax forum.

The clash of economic and social goals must be addressed. In some areas we face a historic
restructuring between two great industries.

It is worth asking whether 50 years of mining royalties are better than hundreds of
years of productive agriculture. At the least, we need an open and democratic debate on
this complex issue.

Brisbane's The Courier-Mail says Premier Anna Bligh wants us to look on the bright
side and end what she called "a politics of pessimism".

Ms Bligh needs to acknowledge that much of the cynicism and pessimism she is noticing
is directed at her own administration rather than the broader state of the economy.

Bungled health payroll systems, ministers seemingly incapable of taking responsibility
for the actions of their own departments, and numerous other signs of administrative incompetence
have given voters more than enough reason to be negative about the present government.

If the Premier wants us to head into the future with a spring in our step and our heads
held high, then she has to give us a real reason for putting our faith in her administration,
with positive policies and positive campaigning.

Any return to negative campaigning in the run-up to the next election will do nothing
more than reaffirm to voters that their cynicism is warranted.

WA: Mallard says DPP's suspect comment beggars belief

PERTH, Feb 21 AAP - Andrew Mallard says it beggars belief prosecutors would drop a
murder case against him if he was still a prime suspect for the brutal killing of a Perth
jeweller.

Mr Mallard, 43, spent his first day out of jail today saying his life would remain
on hold until he could prove his innocence by finding the real murderer of Pamela Lawrence.

He was convicted in 1995 of the 1994 murder of Ms Lawrence, who was found dying, in
a pool of blood, at her upmarket jewellery store in suburban Mosman Park. She had been

FED:High heels more dangerous than sports

SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - Health workers say women are now more likely to injure themselves
from taking a tumble in a pair of high heels than on the sports field.

NSW Ambulance paramedics report a rise in triple-0 calls by women suffering ankle fractures,
dislocated knees, head injuries and broken wrists caused by falling from their shoes,
The Sunday Telegraph says.

Podiatrists and chiropractors have seen "dramatic" increases in chronic injuries from
wearing extreme heels long-term.

Ambulance figures show accidents spike on weekends, especially at horse racing carnivals
and in nightclubs, when "more often than not there is some level of intoxication which
contributes to falling", NSW Paramedics spokesman Craig Pusser said.

"The worst incident we've seen was a girl in her early 20s who rolled her ankle inwards
in very high heels while standing in a club, resulting in a compound fracture, where the
bone actually sticks out," he said. "That's an injury we usually see in footballers."

The height of stilettos has shot up in recent years and they now range up to a staggering 17cm.

And the average pair of heels now towers at 11cm which is almost twice as high as in the 1970s.

The heels throw a woman's weight forward and dramatically increase the risk of overbalancing,
especially on hard surfaces.

VIC:Give blood and save three lives

MELBOURNE, Dec 31 AAP - Save three lives and give blood in 2011 - that's the message
from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service which is urging people to make a blood donation
as part of their New Year's resolution.

Donor Centres will be open in all capital cities over the New Year's weekend and people
will be able to take a break from partying while saving lives and enjoying a cup of tea.

"Every blood donation can save three lives, and it's a very rewarding way of starting
your 2011 in a positive way," said Blood Service spokeswoman Roslyn Mulcahy.

She says that every year during the festive season, the Blood Service experiences a
critical shortage of blood, which is used in cancer treatments and major trauma.

"We all expect blood to be there if we need it, and yet the health of Australians is
relying on just three per cent of the population," said Ms Mulcahy.

She said blood supply gets very low when so many regular donors are on holidays during
the festive season.

"This year, we're appealing for people to come in and give blood or to make an appointment
in the New Year's weekend," she said.

"They can put their feet up, read a magazine, save lives, and then enjoy a snack and
a drink on us."

Potential donors can consult the website donateblood.com.au for the location and opening
hours of the nearest donor centre.

Fed: Teachers to vote on NAPLAN ban=2

Parliamentary secretary for health and ageing Mark Butler told Sky News that asking
parents to supervise the tests was among a range of options the government would consider
if the boycott went ahead.

Parents supervised excursions and other activities, so it was not a novel idea to have
them watch students take the tests, he said.

"It's not something we want to do, we want the teachers' union today to rethink this
threat, we think the tests are important and their job is to supervise them going ahead,"

Mr Butler said.

But Liberal senator Mitch Fifeld said the government had pitted parents and teachers
against each other.

"It's bizarre, Julia Gillard's proposal, that parents basically face off against the
teachers of their own kids," he told Sky News.

Fed: Half of Aust homes now turned onto digital TV

CANBERRA, Aug 28 AAP - More than half of all Australian homes have now made the switch
to digital television, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says.

Senator Conroy said the change to digital television was the nation's biggest format
change since the move to decimal currency in 1966.

He said progress to date suggested Australians were on board.

"There is still a significant challenge ahead but evidence shows strong community awareness
and satisfaction with the improved picture and sound quality, new content and new channels,"

he said in a statement.

"Fifty-three per cent of households are now enjoying the benefits of free-to-air digital
TV broadcasts."

Senator Conroy said the second Digital Tracker Survey, conducted quarterly and released
on Friday, showed the takeup of digital television had risen from 47 per cent to 53 per
cent.

Almost all Australian households (93 per cent) were aware of the digital switchover,
up from 82 per cent in the previous quarter.

The survey shows that 82 per cent of the households who have converted to digital TV
are glad they did, up from 77 per cent.

Under government plans, Australia will completely switch from analog to digital TV
by by December 31, 2013 with the changeover occurring progressively, starting in the Sunraysia/Mildura
area of Victoria in the first half of 2010.

Mr Rudd said Treasury modelling indicated Australia could achieve a five to 15 per
cent cut in emissions while maintaining solid economic growth.

The unconditional five per cent target was equal to a 27 per cent reduction in carbon
pollution for each Australian from 2000 to 2020, he said.

Mr Rudd said reaching a global agreement would be a long process.

"This will be the usual process of argy-bargy that we have seen in the past and there

Mr Rudd said the government took seriously Professor Ross Garnaut's recommendations

SRI LANKA: OUTCRY PERSUADES CUSTOMS OFFICE TO RELEASE BOOKS

IPS Correspondents
Inter Press Service English News Wire
03-26-2008
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Mar. 26, 2008 (IPS/GIN) -- Media freedom has
hit a new low in Sri Lanka, where customs officials concerned with
anti-government material recently withheld advance copies of a book
by a respected Sri Lankan economist and researcher.
The book, "Economy of the conflict in Sri Lanka: From embargo
to repression," by Muttukrishna Sarvananthan, was published by the
Washington-based East West Center.
After days of wrangling, the parcel of books was finally
released to the author on Tuesday after Sarvananthan shot off a fax
to the director-general of customs, threatening legal action. Media
agencies and activist groups also put pressure on the customs
officials.
"I was not aware that there was a policy of detaining books, and
no one at customs told me under which law it was kept back,"
Sarvananthan said before the books were released.
"The naive custom officers [including a director] did not know
that this book is available online at the East-West Center Web site
and for sale at Amazon.com," the economist added. "In the present
information age there can be no effective censorship of any book,
let alone an academic book."
Sarvananthan's is not the only book available on the net that
was detained. A research book on information technology in Sri
Lanka has not been released for almost two months.
The author, Rohan Samarajiva, has not been informed when his
book, "ICT Infrastructure in Emerging Asia, Policy and Regulatory
Roadblocks," published by Sage India, will be released. Ironically,
both books can be downloaded free on the internet.
Samarajiva thinks his book may have been held back because it
was in the same consignment as another publication on the Sri
Lankan conflict.
He wrote on the Web site of LIRNEasia, a regional ICT
organization, that launched his book, that "The problem is that it
came in the same shipment as a book by an English scholar teaching
at the Colombo University which has the word militarization in the
title."
Sri Lankan customs officials periodically detain books and refer
them to the defense ministry or the department of information for
clearance.
"As far as I know, they have no right, legal or moral, to censor
books in a democratic society. I have evidence that this book
censorship is occurring on a broader scale and is not limited to
this single shipment from Sage India," Samarajiva's posting said.
"Our book has nothing about the conflict, other than a single
chapter that I co-authored on tele-use between the wars in the
government areas of Jaffna. But if this goes on, I may be compelled
to write a whole book on the destruction of civil liberties by
people who don't have a clue," he said.
Sarvananthan added that he has complained to Rajiva Wijesinha,
a professor who is secretary general of the Government Peace
Secretariat.
An increasingly edgy government has been cracking down on media
freedom in Sri Lanka. In the annual world ranking published by the
Paris-based Reporters without Borders, the island now languishes
at 141, a steep fall from 51 in 2002.
International media watchdogs have raised concerns over the new
appointment of a retired army general to the state-run television,
Rupavahini.
Last week, workers at Rupavahini, the country's largest TV
network, threatened to hold a strike that could have crippled
transmissions following a spate of attacks on employees. On March
14, Anurasiri Hettige became the fifth employee to be attacked by
unidentified assailants since end-December.
Rupavahini workers and media rights groups have linked the
attacks to the storming of the station by government minister
Mervyn Silva on Dec. 27. Silva was roughed up and his face was
colored with paint by angry Rupavahini employees as he was escorted
out under military protection
President Mahinda Rajapakse met with representatives from the
Rupavahini workers' unions and promised to bring an end to the
assaults. Silva was also summoned to the meeting midway through the
proceedings by the president.
However, soon after the conclusion of the meeting, a retired
major general of the Sri Lankan army, Sunil Silva, was appointed
to a senior administrative post at Rupavahini.
"A military leader in a state media group threatens the
objectivity of journalists who are already struggling to
independently confirm information about the combat between the
government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam," the New
York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said in a letter to the
Sri Lankan president over the weekend.
Susil Kindelpitiya, director, news at Sirasa, a private TV
station, has warned the inspector general of police in a letter
that Silva has threatened bodily harm to his staff. "Given the
numerous past instances of public violent attacks against citizens
and media institutions by Minister Mervyn Silva, we are seriously
concerned about threats to life and property of [Sirasa's] News
First staff," he said in the letter. Kindelpitiya has also warned
that Sirasa may be forced to take legal action.

Fed: Australia seeks US secret technology in new fighters

By Max Blenkin, Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, March 15 AAP - Australia has demanded a US guarantee that it will fully disclose
secret technology before Canberra signs up for further involvement in the Joint Strike
Fighter (JSF) project.

"Guaranteed access to necessary JSF data and technology to allow Australia to operate
and support the JSF will be required before we join the next phase of the project," Australia's
defence adviser in Washington, Rear Admiral Raydon Gates, has told the US Senate armed
services committee.

He said on-schedule delivery of the new Lockheed Martin F-35 JSF was critical because
of the planned retirement of the ageing F-111 and F/A-18 aircraft early next decade.

Australia joined the JSF project in 2002 as one of eight foreign partners. So far it
has invested $300 million in the development phase.

The first production aircraft is set to fly later this year, and Australia is now negotiating
to join the production phase, which is expected to be finalised before the end of this
year.

Under current plans, Australia will acquire about 100 JSF aircraft, which are scheduled
to enter service in the period 2012-14.

JSF is a stealth fighter with advanced radar, weapons and mission systems.

Prime contractor Lockheed Martin has repeatedly assured Australia of full access to
this technology.

In a report released today, the US General Accounting Office (GAO) said transfer of
JSF technologies to partner nations was expected to far exceed past transfers of advanced
military technology for other systems.

The most sensitive technology typically relates to stealth and computer source codes
to which Australia, as a US ally, could expect to gain reasonable access.

But transfers even to close allies can be halted by just a few powerful US congressmen
by way of the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Australia has been negotiating an ITAR waiver but the problem is not Australia's alone.

The United Kingdom has also vigorously voiced its concerns.

Britain's defence procurement minister Lord Peter Drayson added to that today, saying
the US decision to eliminate funding for a back-up JSF engine, built by General Electric
and Rolls-Royce, could threaten British participation in the JSF program.

Admiral Gates said there needed to be difficult legislative change in the US to overcome
the technology transfer issue.

"Legislative change is a difficult road. I thought our political system in Australia
was challenging enough. Here it is quite fascinating," he said.

"I don't think it is impossible. I think it is critical to us."

The head of the Australian Defence Force new air combat capability project, Air Commodore
John Harvey, said the JSF would meet all future threats.

He rejected claims that JSF's stealth capability had been downgraded.

"The requirements are the same and the aircraft is performing to those requirements,"

he told the ABC.

"What has happened is there was a re-categorisation of just the terminology in the
US and that led to the change of one letter in one powerpoint slide on the internet. So
there is no change to the performance or the capability."

Air Commodore Harvey said Australia had been involved in the JSF project for more than
three years.

"We have had DSTO (Defence Science and Technology Organisation) scientists involved
in analysing it. We have had Australian pilots flying simulated missions and so we are
very confident of the capability of the aircraft," he said.

Snap.com Plans to Combat 'Click Fraud'

People scoffed nearly a decade ago when serial entrepreneur Bill Gross proposed an online search engine that ranked results based on how much advertisers were willing to pay to have their links tied to specific requests.

But the concept developed into a revolutionary idea that turned Internet search engines into massive moneymaking machines.

Now Gross hopes to shake things up again with Snap.com, which is providing another commercial twist on search engines while also promising to deliver more useful results than industry leaders Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc.

"We feel there is so much more innovation that can take place in search," Gross said Monday. "It's hard to say that little Snap will ever beat Google, but I think we can become a viable alternative."

As Snap gears up to shift out of test phase, the search engine's parent company _ Pasadena-based Perfect Market Technologies Inc. _ has raised $10 million in a venture capital round led by Mayfield, a Menlo Park firm. Gross and Snap CEO Tom McGovern intend to use some of that money to spread the word about a system that he believes can deliver better value for advertisers.

Google, Yahoo and other search engines make money by distributing sponsored Web links that are tied to a search query or the content displayed on a page. Advertisers pay commissions whenever the commercial links are clicked on, even if the traffic doesn't result in a sale.

Gross pioneered this "pay-per-click" approach at GoTo.com, which later changed its name to Overture Services before Yahoo bought it for $1.7 billion in 2003. Google introduced its own pay-per-click model, known as AdWords, in 2002.

As it has emerged into a highly effective marketing tool, the pay-per-click system has spawned more mischief, too. Looking for a competitive advantage, some advertisers have repeatedly clicked on a rival's link in an attempt to drain their marketing budgets. Other rogue Web sites belonging to the ad networks maliciously click on commercial links to generate more commissions for themselves.

The estimates on the prevalence of so-called "click fraud" vary widely. Critics of the system say 10 to 20 percent of the clicks are bogus _ done by a person or automated program with no intention of buying something. Others say incidents of fraud are vastly overblown.

Gross is among those who believe click fraud is a big problem. He aims to change things with a "cost per action" system that only charges ad commission when a purchase is actually completed.

"I believe the commercial side of search will evolve toward cost-per-action in the next five to 10 years," Gross said.

Other entrepreneurs also are trying to improve upon ideas they conceived years ago. For example, the co-founders of online price and shopping comparison site MySimon.com are taking another stab at the niche. Michael Yang and Yeogirl Yun recently raised $7.2 million in venture capital to back Become.com, a search engine that pulls together product reviews and prices.

Gross's record of innovation helped separate Snap from other startups trying to elbow their way into the search engine industry, said Allen Morgan, Mayfield's managing director.

"It's kind of like the Big Bang is happening right now," Morgan said. "The search market is exploding infinitely and in all directions. We feel like it's opening a pretty interesting opportunity for a company like Snap."

But not all investors admire Gross. After the dot-com bust, a group of prominent investors sued him, alleging he and his wife had been looting their business incubator, Idealab, to support lavish lifestyles. Gross brushed off the complaints as sour grapes, and a judge eventually rejected an attempt to liquidate Idealab so investors could recoup some of their losses.

Morgan, who is joining Snap's board of directors, is betting Snap can become a more refined search engine alternative _ a sort of Target to Google's Wal-Mart.

But Snap faces a long haul ahead. Mountain View-based Google handled 1.8 billion U.S. search requests last month, giving it a 36.9 percent share of the market, according to comScore Networks. Sunnyvale-based Yahoo ranked second with 1.5 billion U.S. searches, or 30.4 percent of the market. As of Monday, Snap had processed just 16.4 million search requests since its site debuted nine months ago.

Archimedes

Archimedes (287 bc–212bc) Greek mathematician Archimedes' father was an astronomer and he himself inherited an interest in the subject. He was educated in Alexandria and spent most of the rest of his life in his birthplace, Syracuse, under the patronage of King Hieron. Archimedes was without question the greatest mathematician and scientist that classical Greek civilization produced and is usually considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He was held in very high regard even by his contemporaries, and Karl Friedrich Gauss thought that only Isaac Newton was Archimedes' equal as a mathematician. Archimedes was as much an applied mathematician as a pure mathematician. He was very much interested in putting his theoretical discoveries to practical use and is known to have been skilled in making his own equipment and carrying out his own experiments. It is no exaggeration to describe Archimedes as the creator of the science of mechanics. Naturally before his time many isolated facts had been discovered, but it was only with him that mechanics became a unified body of theory capable of yielding new and unexpected practical applications.

Archimedes was able to find methods for determining the center of gravity of a variety of bodies. He also gave the first general theory of levers, and organized a practical demonstration to show how, with a suitable series of levers, a very small force is capable of moving a very large weight. He amazed his contemporaries by arranging for the king of Syracuse to move a large ship simply by pressing a small lever. In connection with his work on levers Archimedes made one of his famous statements, “Give me a firm place to stand on and I will move the Earth.” Archimedes also had a practical interest in optics, although no writings of his on the subject have come down to us. He put all this newfound theoretical knowledge to deadly effect when Syracuse was besieged by the Romans, by designing and building a variety of war machines. Among these were enormous mirrors to focus the Sun's rays and set fire to the Roman ships, and a variety of catapults.

Archimedes also successfully applied his scientific discoveries in hydrostatics. He designed all sorts of pumps, and the Archimedean water-screw is still widely used. But his most famous practical success was in solving a problem presented to him by King Hieron. Hieron wished to know whether a newly made crown, which was supposed to be of pure gold was, as he suspected, partly silver. Archimedes solved the problem by grasping the concept of relative density. By immersing successively the crown itself and pieces of gold and silver of equal weight in full containers of water and observing the amount of water each displaced, Archimedes was able to show that the crown was indeed not made of pure gold. One of the famous stories associated with Archimedes tells how this occured to him when he was getting into his bath and observed how the more of his body was immersed the more water overflowed from the bath. He saw instantly how to solve his problem, leaped from the bath, and rushed through the streets, stark naked, shouting “Eureka!” (I have found it).

Archimedes' work in applied mathematics and science ensured his great contemporary fame, but some of his greatest work was probably in his more esoteric researches in pure mathematics. Like all Greek mathematicians, his interest was primarily concentrated on geometry. Arithmetic was greatly hampered by a very cumbersome system of notation. Although Archimedes himself invented a much improved system for notation of very large numbers, algebra had yet to be invented, in Europe at least. Archimedes' most profound achievement was to perfect the ‘method of exhaustion’ for calculating the areas and volumes of curved figures. The method involves successively approximating the figure concerned by inscribed and circumscribed polygons. This method essentially used the concept of limit – a concept that took some time for later European mathematicians to grasp. Archimedes used this method to determine an approximate value for π, which was not to be improved on for many centuries.

Archimedes was put to death by a Roman soldier when the Romans, under general Marcellus, finally successfully besieged Syracuse. The killing was against the orders of Marcellus who respected Archimedes and wished for him to be protected. Archimedes was apparently drawing mathematical symbols in the sand when killed.

AaeHarpoon a JapAAE logo blasted as being racist.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

An Australian hire firm which painted "Save a Whale - Harpoon a Jap" on the side of one its camping vans was accused by a senior politician yesterday of racism and risking a tourist backlash.Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh said she was concerned that Japanese tourists should feel welcome in the state.Money brought in by Japanese visitors is an important part of Australia's tourism earnings, despite an ongoing dispute between the two countries over Japanese whaling in Antarctic waters. The northern city of Cairns, where the van was spotted, is a popular destination for tourists visiting the Great Barrier Reef."I don't think there's any doubt that this slogan on a van in Cairns is racism, and racism has no place in Queensland," Bligh said in the state capital Brisbane."I think it's important to reassure the people of Japan that Japanese tourists are welcomed with open arms here in Queensland, and no more warmly than they are when they are in Cairns."Wicked Campers, the firm which owns the van, specialises in provocative slogans. It has in the past been accused of sexism over other slogans and has been reported previously to Australia's Advertising Standards Bureau.

Bligh urged anyone offended by the latest slogan to complain."This latest slogan on the side of a Wicked van I think has really descended into bad taste and one that is damaging our reputation internationally," Bligh said."I would encourage anybody who sees these sorts of slogans to bring them to the attention of the relevant authorities, because I'm determined to stamp it out."A company official contacted by AFP confirmed that the company had painted the slogan on one of its vans.General manager Dave Kinkead said he believed the slogan had not been removed and the van was still available for hire in the Cairns area. The firm had only received one complaint about the van, he said, adding that although its main clientele was European, it had Japanese clients as well."The reason the van is out there is to bring awareness to quite a contemporary issue, of harpooning of these beautiful animals," he said.

Schools.com Releases Series of Tips for Entry-level Grads as Result of Survey Findings.

Foster City, CA (PRWEB) June 20, 2011

Schools.com, a leading education site, last week released a series of tips and findings that aim to help recent college graduates as they apply for entry-level jobs. Included in the series is a piece on the primary characteristics that influence the employment decisions of hiring managers. The series of articles comes after Schools.com's partner site, CollegeGrad.com, released the results of the 2011 Top Entry-Level Employers survey, which collected data from 93 companies about their hiring practices and projected hiring numbers for the remainder of 2011. The survey also showed that the number of entry-level hires increased 22 percent from 2010.

"Recent college graduates will see that a lot of good news came out of the CollegeGrad.com survey," said Seth Restaino, Schools.com spokesperson. "To supplement the results, we really wanted to dig deep into what employers were looking for and be as beneficial as possible to the former students taking their first steps into the real world."

Schools.com also created a slideshow of the top six entry-level jobs available at the companies that completed the survey, which was also featured in a blog on Forbes.com. Results showed that companies such as Verizon Wireless, Teach for America and Target are heavily seeking recent grads to fulfill a wide range of positions from retail operators to teachers to brand management.

The site further discussed the results of the survey as the kick-off to their biweekly Twitter Chat series which launched last week. Participants talked about the post-college job hunt and what they have done to make themselves stand out at a job interview. The next Schools.com Twitter Chat will be on Thursday, June 30 at 11 a.m. PST and can be found using the hashtag #schoolschat.

Mahsa clashes with Trump again--and survives yet again!(Diaspora: Around the globe)

The Iranian-American contestant on the NBC show "The Apprentice" has

lasted another week without multimillion dollar entrepreneur Donald Trump firing her from the show, which means she is still in the running to score a job with Trump Industries.

Mahsa Saeidi-Azcuy, 29, is competing for a job with Trump Industries on season 10 of NBC's "The Apprentice," featuring Trump. The show, which began with 16 contestants, pits a women's team against a men's team each week.

Last week's task was for both teams to create and record a gorilla marketing stunt that would go viral on the Internet for Popcorn Indiana, a popcorn company. The team judged to have made the best video would be safe from any firings, while the losing team would have one team member fired.

Saeidi-Azcuy was the project manager for the women's team in this episode, while Clint was the project manager for the men's team.

The women's team created a video of people working out at a gym while simultaneously eating popcorn, while the men's video documented people violently pouring popcorn on the heads of people passing by.

"I will stop at nothing to win ... I'm going to be a very strong project manager," Saeidi-Azcuy said, when she was selected to be the team's project manager.

Donald Trump Jr, the son of the CEO of the Trump Industries, agreed Saeidi-Azcuy was doing a great job in her role as project manager. "Mahsa seems to be doing a great job," Donald Jr. said. "I mean, she really looks like what I would imagine a director to be doing."

Unfortunately for Saeidi-Azcuy and her team, however, the women's team lost to the men's team. When the two teams were called into Trump's boardroom, where each week one contestant is fired, Trump watched the two videos and announced that the men's team had won.

But the Iranian-American contestant was not a fan of the men's video. "Not impressed, Mr. Trump. I thought it was disrespectful to the product ... It was the guys throwing popcorn at each other," Saeidi-Azcuy said.

Saeidi-Azcuy then called out Tyana as the weakest member of the group, said she didn't contribute to the team and told Trump that he should fire her from the show.

"Mahsa, if you did it all by yourself and you lost, why shouldn't I fire you?" Trump asked".

Because, Mr. Trump, as a leader you have to delegate people to come assist you," Saeidi-Azcuy said.

Trump then asked Brandi, one of the members of the women's team, how she felt Saeidi-Azcuy did as a project manager.

"I certainly think that Mahsa did a great job," Brandi said.

When the discussions were over, Trump asked Mahsa to chose two people to join her in the boardroom, one of which would be fired. Mahsa chose Tyana and Liza to join her in the boardroom.

Once in the boardroom, Ivanka, Trump's daughter, said, "Mahsa, you're a very strong person and you have very, very strong opinions about all of the other project managers. You're a project manager and you lost."

Saeidi-Azcuy responded, "I'm tremendously disappointed in myself."

But then the conversation took a new tone when Liza, instead of choosing Saeidi-Azcuy to be fired, chose Tyana to be fired. Trump then asked Liza if she was too scared to call out Saeidi-Azcuy because of her strong personality and character.

"I'm tough," Mahsa said, seemingly agreeing with Trump.

But Trump quickly put Saeidi-Azcuy in her place. "Don't say you're tough. You know what the worst thing is? People who say they're tough. Because usually people who say they're tough are the least tough. So don't say you're tough," Trump said.

In the end, however, Trump fired Tyana. The Iranian-born contestant will be safe until next week, when again, another contestant will be fired. The show, created by Mark Burnett airs Thursday nights at 9/8 central.

Govt eye on broadbandto help win rural vote.

THE poor state of phone and internet services in rural areas is back on the agenda and Communications Minister David Cunliffe has sent a strong hint that the Government is considering building a network to plug coverage gaps.

"I want to say that I am hearing loud and clear from farmers and rural New Zealand a great deal of disquiet about the state of the network," Cunliffe told a conference in Auckland this week.

"Quite clearly, there has been a history of under-investment in rural telecommunications, and we want to see that turned around."

What exactly the Government has in mind for farmers is far from clear. The last publicly funded foray into rural broadband was in the form of the flawed Project Probe, which was designed to connect rural schools and communities but did little for competition as Telecom picked up the lion's share of the money.

Cunliffe's timing, a few years after Probe, is impeccable. By the time any plan for a new Government-funded rural broadband project has worked its way through the Cabinet and into the planning stage, we'll be in the run-up to an election.

Given the recent politicisation of the broadband issue since the Government moved in to open up Telecom's copper-line monopoly, rural broadband is likely to be one of Labour's key election pledges.

The same situation has just played out across the Tasman where Prime Minister John Howard and his Government, facing an election later this year, have just committed more than $1 billion to allow Opel - a private partnership of telecoms operator Optus and rural services provider Elders, to build a wireless broadband network covering hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in rural Australia.

In doing so, Howard took the steam out of a rival proposal from opposition leader Kevin Rudd, to spend close to $5 billion building a more ambitious national fibre optic network.

Cunliffe will no doubt study the structure of the Opel project very closely. It will use WiMAX wireless technology to form the basis of its rural network, allowing users equipped with aerials and routers to pick up high-speed internet connections and use internet-based (VoIP) phone services.

WiMAX is a clever technology that's nevertheless unproven in wide scale deployments and is generally backed by alternative telecoms operators seeking to gain inroads against mobile phone players who are delivering mobile broadband services via their networks of cell towers. For that reason, the Australian project has raised eyebrows in the telecoms industry.

However, New Zealand has a small stable of wireless operators, namely CallPlus and Woosh Wireless, who are betting the future on WiMAX.

CallPlus has secured access to US$450 million ($588 million) in funding from a Japanese merchant bank to build a WiMAX network and Woosh, a past recipient of Probe funding, is hoping WiMAX will rescue it from the bad technology decisions it has made in the past.

An auction of radio spectrum suitable for delivering WiMAX services will be held in December and the outcome will determine who is left with enough spectrum to serve the rural sector and the country in general.

If Cunliffe is smart, he will ditch the grant mentality that accompanied Project Probe and follow the Australian model, matching an investment from a credible private consortium for a rural broadband service spanning all regions.

There's scope there for co-operation between the WiMAX players and internet providers who are spotting increasing potential in the rural sector.

But Cunliffe needs to learn from the problems that have dogged State-owned network operator Kordia's own rural broadband service, Extend.

The sales pitch should be easier this time around.

The question is whether the Government is willing to think on a more ambitious scale and deliver the funding that would allow the private sector to service rural New Zealand properly.
